They were trapped in a world of strangers who seemed incapable of knowing Mortal’s height, their haircut, their vocal patterns, their most minute movements and expressions, without taking them as signs and symbols from which their entire being could be extrapolated: their capabilities; their politics; the size of their ego; the kinds of sex they wanted to have; which out of the mere handful of mainstream genders to catalog them as, no matter how many times Mortal told them they had no gender at all.
