"we stand with trans people" == "thoughts and prayers"
I see a number of self-proclaimed allies saying "we stand with trans people," which is rather like saying "thoughts and prayers" after a mass shooting. If you stand with trans people, here's what I think you need to do:
Reject every single ballot measure that would increase discrimination for trans and gender-nonconforming students and teachers in K-12 education.
Call for bills to amend Title IX to prohibit discrimination and harassment against trans and gender-nonconforming students. If you want a loophole for sports, whatever. Republicans used sports as a Trojan Horse for a sweeping attack on classroom inclusion, curriculum, and higher-ed research.
Revive the gender-inclusive ENDA. Will we get it passed while Trump is in office? Probably not. But Congress needs to make the intent clear to support court challenges to Trump's executive orders.
Push back on the shameful treatment of trans people with honorable service in the Armed Forces. They're subjected to secret kangaroo courts and labeled as a danger on separation. If they served honorably, their separation status should reflect that. If they are in the service, they should not be subjected to a witch hunt.
Call for restoration of peer-reviewed grants process and disbursement of funds blocked by the Trump administration.
Call for investigation of the illegal treatment of transgender people in federal prisons and government custody.
Call to impeach RFKJr and McMahon, and a dozen others in the administration.
Actually pitch in to help with local mutual aid networks and organizations.
