Diaspora Character Development: Lakeshi Fairtrader

Previously: setting generation

Working on reboot of a Traveler/Zozer Solo adventure based around medical drama in space: doctors and spacers traveling from planet to planet trying to save people. This time around I'm using Diaspora, a nice Traveler to FATE adaptation. Last week I built out the overall setting and now I'm trying to fill out the squad.

Every crew of idealistic professionals trying to save the universe needs a salty skipper to fly them around...

Picked "Skipper" rather than "Captain" to emphasize the civilian role.

Growing Up

Lakeshi grew up as a member of transport clan delivering newly constructed spaceframes to paying clients and returning with retired spaceframes for deconstruction or refurbishment. Half of the year, she lived on a ship in an informal apprenticeship. At age 13, she started a rotation of formal apprenticeships across multiple spaceflight roles. The experience included a wide number of different ship types and systems.

Diaspora uses a biography system for defining characters. This provides an opportunity to explore both the character and the setting.

Starting Out

Lakeshi joined the Steel Navy in search of experience with bigger ships and roles beyond transport. She was well-regarded but not decorated or highly promoted. Her tour was mostly peaceful.

One of the things I like about Traveler is the character generation system involves dice rolls at each life stage that influence how successful your character was. Lakeshi rolled a middling career.

Crisis

A war in the Folly system turned dirty with multiple outside groups attempting to influence the outcome through arms trading, piracy, and smuggling. Lakeshi was assigned to command a prize vessel out of the system. The ship was sabotaged. Lakeshi was able to save most of her skeleton crew. After months of microgravity and minimal nutrition, they were rescued. The incident left her scarred though.

Sidetracked

Lakeshi returned to her clan, now with the title of skipper and command of her own crews. She got a reputation for taking ships others would not touch. Her luck ran thin, and some crews barely made it home.

Lakeshi stepped back from command to serve as an engineer for smuggling ops. Her willingness to push systems to the redline and keep them running served her well. She became a regular for the Curiosity medical mission, leading to an offer for a new command.
